Christmas eve we were bustling to get the house ready for our guests. Mr. Llama was taking out the garbage, but he called me to come help him. Apparently a cat had gotten inside the empty, closed lid trash can. We have a city issued green trash can (aka. big and bulky and hard to open). I hesitantly peeked inside the can and definitely saw a bundle of spiky fur. Mr. Llama went to get his gloves and I peeked again... this time the animal moved and it was NOT a cat. It had a long pointed face, much like a raccoon or possum or some related relative of theirs.
At this point, I'm sure it was hilarious to watch us try and get the animal out of the trash can. We had no idea how it managed to get inside or if it was injured or just stuck. Mr. Llama tried tipping the can on its side.... animal wouldn't budge. Mr. Llama took a wide berth and looked inside the tipped over can to see if the animal was able to move.... it seriously looked like a ginormous 'coon. It filled the bottom of the trash can and appeared well enough to move. We were very, very hesitant at this point. Raccoons are vicious creatures and we wanted to keep ourselves out of harm's way.
After a few more tips and kicks with no luck, Mr. Llama heaved the trash can onto the porch and dumped it out... the animal rolled out and just sat there. It was at this point we truly got a good look at what was certainly not a raccoon... or a possum... or anything we had seen before. After a few seconds, the non-raccoon got up and scampered away. Mr. Llama found a potential match to what the animal might be... half raccoon and half something else that lives up in these high mountains. I can't remember what he said.... starts with an M.
Once we dealt with the trash issue, we managed to get the house picked up and the food ready for our guests. We spend a lovely evening with friends over delicious food and good conversations. The children played very nicely and overall we had a wonderful Christmas eve.
