Memory Lane

I came across a wanted ad for someone to alter a prom dress today which reminded me of when I needed a bridesmaid dress altered so many years ago....

My bridesmaid dress I ordered for T and G's wedding needed to be hemmed and the shoulders needed to come together a bit more along with the front raised a tad bit for comfort level. I went to a local seamstress that a friend had recommended. The seamstress' studio was in a remodeled garage room out of her home. I changed into the dress and the lady went to work pinning, tucking, and figuring out what needed to be where. Half way through the pinning and tucking process, she asked if I minded if she took something off saying it would go quicker. Not really knowing what she was talking about, but knowing that I was on a time crunch, I said "sure."

She gave me the pin cushion to hold and she TOOK OFF HER ARM!

I hadn't noticed that she had a prosthetic arm when I came in. I hadn't noticed anything different about her arm up to that point. Of course I wasn't really paying attention. I was in a hurry to get pinned and tucked and on my way since I had stopped in on my break and needed to get back to work.

But she took off her arm!

I really tried to hide my shocked state. It wasn't that I was uncomfortable with her not having an arm. It was that I hadn't noticed and was completely blown out of the water with the fact she took off her arm! Apparently I did a good job hiding my shock since she looked at me and said most people are in for shock when she doesn't wear her "arm" and she was glad I was okay with it. She finished pinning and tucking in record time and pretty soon I was on my way. She did a wonderful job with the dress and I recommended her to my friends that needed any seamstress work done... of course I didn't tell them about the arm. :)

  1. BAHAH! Funny how she didn't say, "do you mind waiting while I just take this off" (pointing to arm) or just mention what she was doing.
