Curse of the Frosting

I have been trying to bake and decorate a cake successfully for a few weeks now. I've never doubted my baking skills and thought the entire process would be rather easy. Wrong. It's been three weeks and three complete disasters. I have finally got the cake part down and the taste isn't bad.... for cake. I don't particularly like cake so if I think it tastes okay, it usually taste good to other people.

The frosting is a whole other matter and I am ready to buy frosting just so I can frost the stupid cake. I'm not sure how I mess up the frosting, but I mess it up every time. I made sugar cookies last week with the intention to make them all pretty and hand them out to friends... The frosting looked so awful I didn't dare give them to anyone.

It's not that the frosting tastes bad.... it's actually really yummy. The consistency is so off and gross looking that I can't bring myself to do anything with it. I can't keep using ingredients for bad batches. But I really want to frost and decorate a stupid cake. I got a new decorating set from Mr. Llama and I want to use them and be all fancy... or even simple decorations. Like plain frosting on a plain cake.
Oh this is frustrating.

  1. Hey Kristine!
When I make my cakes I just use the Wilton recipe
    - 1/2 c. butter
    - 1/2 c. shortening (that's what helps the frosting "crust"
    - 1 tsp. vanilla
    - 4 c. powdered sugar
    - 2 Tbsp. milk
Cream the butter and shortening, add vanilla. Gradually add powered sugar, and lastly add the milk to get the right consistency.

I don't know if that's any different from what you've been trying, but it's pretty simple, and I've made it TONS of times and everybody always loves it. :)
